Roade Primary School
Curriculum -
Topic: Homes and Buildings
The final two terms in Class R will provide an important opportunity for your child to consolidate their learning and begin the transition into KS1. To help us do this we will be joining the whole school in celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and our learning will be linked to Royal families, both real and imaginary!
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Your child will be taking part in activities based on the theme ‘Relationships’ for term five and ‘Changes’ for term six. We will also be covering a unit of work called ‘Living and growing’ where we will be looking at animals and their babies, birthdays and growing up. During Healthy School Week we will be looking at how to keep our bodies healthy and how athletes are preparing for the Olympic Games.
Communication, Language and Literacy
Your child will continue to develop their knowledge of sounds and blends. They will be using this knowledge to sound out and write both simple regular words and more complex words, they will also begin to learn spellings for homework. Writing activities, based around our topic, will encourage them to write simple sentences independently, remembering to use a capital letter and full stop. As a class we will be reading stories, poems and information books linked to Royal families of all types, shapes and sizes! Your child will continue to be given a reading book to read at home and this will be changed as often as possible.
Mathematical Development
The main focus for these terms will be to develop the children’s problem solving skills involving recognising, counting, ordering, adding and subtracting numbers to twenty and beyond. Your child will also learn about money, measures, shapes, patterns and symmetry. These will be taught in a practical way which is challenging and fun.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
This work will be based on the topic ‘A Right Royal Rumpus’ and will involve finding out about past and present events. During Healthy School Week we will be learning about the Olympic Games and what it takes to be an athlete. This will include looking at growing needs, healthy eating, fitness and comparing different types of sport.
This term your child will also have the opportunity to participate in gardening activities within the outside area.
Your child will continue to be taught how to use the computers and the various programs, developing their computer skills. They will also be taught how to use the programmable toys for a particular purpose.
It would be very helpful if your child could learn how to type their name using the keyboard and also learn to spell out the word Roade.
Physical Development
Your child will be taking part in various dance, gymnastic and games activities, these will culminate in them performing dances at our June Festival and competing in our Olympic style sports day! Your child will also take part in a variety of activities involving hitting, throwing, catching and bouncing a ball.
PE Days – Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Creative Development
Your child will be given the opportunity to further develop their drawing, painting and making skills relating to our topics. This will include experimenting with a variety of materials in two and three dimensions. In music the children will choose and order musical sounds to achieve an effect; recognise and use changes in timbre, tempo, pitch and dynamics. In the final term they will be singing simple songs from memory, with expression and a sense of the shape of the melody. They will use their voices confidently in a variety of ways and listen carefully and recall short rhythmic and melodic patterns.
