Curriculum - Year 6 - Terms 5 and 6

Literacy

We will study a topic related fiction text and use it as a stimulus for drama and short story writing. The children will research Dr Barnardo and write a biography. The poetry of Edward Lear and Wordsworth will be studied in Term 6.

Each day the children will spend thirty minutes on a range of reading/writing activities, some of which are adult lead. The aim of these sessions is to increase the children’s enjoyment of reading and practise their comprehension and writing skills.

Please encourage your child to read daily.  Even if your child is a confident reader, it is still vitally important to hear your child read and to read to him/her as often as possible.

Spellings will continue to be tested on demand, so please encourage your child to learn their set and ask to be tested. Writing the new words in a sentence is a good way to practise, and shows that the word is understood in context.

Numeracy

The Y5 and Y6 children will continue to be taught in 3 sets. Over the 2 terms they will be working on calculation, knowing and using number facts, understanding shape and using and applying mathematics to solve problems.

Knowing times tables by heart can help children with many aspects of calculation and problem solving. Please help your child by practising at home both orally and in writing.

Try to involve your child in everyday maths such as money, sharing quantities, measuring and weighing.

Science

In Term 5 the children will learn about ‘Gases Around Us’ and in Term 6 we are studying ‘Changing States’.

Geography

The children will be developing their mapping and investigative skills whilst learning about local history.

History

We will study the history of our school and the village as well as finding out about the Northampton shoe industry.

ICT

The children will create a podcast and combine media formats using Movie Maker. They will also create a multi-layered presentation.

Art – Term 5

The children will be sketching buildings; drawing and painting shoes and making clay model buildings.

DT Term 6

The children will design and make a felt slipper.

PSHE

In Term 5 the children will cover relationships, drugs and sun safety. Our theme for Term 6 is ‘Changes’.

RE

The children will be learning about Sikhism and looking at ‘Milestones and Meanings’.

Games/PE

The children will be taking part in a selection of dance, games and athletics activities. Our PE lessons are on Thursday and Friday. Please make sure that your child has PE kit in school at all times.

French

We will have several ‘French’ days during the next 2 terms, continuing with the Catherine Cheater scheme, listening to French music and trying French food.

Music

During Term 5 the children will be learning to play a 3 note chord as part of an accompaniment and will compose a song based on chords.

In Term 6 the children will be working with TV theme tunes.
