Mathematics
Intent
At Roade Primary School, we strive to promote ambitious mathematicians, who strive to learn new skills and never be afraid to make mistakes. We build on a strong arithmetic base, to varied fluency and then to reasoning and problem-solving skills. The aim is for every child to have the opportunity to excel within mathematics and feel confident within the subject.
The curriculum caters to wide range of ability, using a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract activities. This encourages learners to be creative within their approach to the subject and strive to succeed. We work closely with the children who find some of the topic areas more of a struggle, accepting that everyone can find different elements of the curriculum a challenge. Our approach to the diversity within our learners, means that every child can succeed within mathematics at Roade Primary School.
Implementation
At Roade Primary School, we use White Rose to implement our curriculum through the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach.
Children have the opportunity to use concrete resources and are taught to apply these methods to pictorial and abstract problems.
We believe that high expectations are crucial – teachers believe that all children can achieve regardless of ability. This involves carefully planned, small, coherent steps that are achievable.
We scaffold through depth, rather than accelerating through content, encouraging our pupils to access challenges at their level when working independently, as well as when being supported in order to achieve their full potential. Our children are required to reason mathematically and are offered opportunities to work on key ideas and learning that encourages intelligent practice. This is fostered by drawing children’s attention to important features and structures of Mathematics and by making connections through lessons that incorporate procedural variation (by varying numbers or unknowns, strategies or problems) and conceptual variation (by varying the representations given to support children’s understanding).
Impact
Children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication.
Outcomes in books and the working wall evidence all opportunities for mathematical thinking in a fun and engaging way. Maths is assessed through a combination of teacher judgements and White Rose end of term assessment.
Mathematic Threads
We have 8 threads that run through our mathematics curriculum, they are:
- Place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions, decimals and percentages
- Ratio, proportion and algebra
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Statistics
At Roade Primary School we study mathematics as part of our continuous provision within EYFS. Mathematics is then studied daily, throughout years 1 to 6.
